News

We are pleased to share that Professor Sascha Steffen, Director of the Centre for European Transformation at Frankfurt School, has been appointed as a new member of the Advisory Scientific Committee (ASC) of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) for a four-year term.

Established in 2010, the ESRB is tasked with overseeing the financial system of the European Union, focusing on the prevention and mitigation of systemic risks that could jeopardize financial stability. Its oversight spans a wide array of financial entities, including banks, insurers, asset managers, shadow banks, and financial market infrastructures. The ASC plays a pivotal role in supporting the ESRB’s work by conducting research that informs the macroprudential decisions of the ESRB’s General Board, chaired by ECB President Christine Lagarde.

Professor Steffen, who also serves as Vice President of Research, Professor of Finance, and DWS Senior Chair in Finance at Frankfurt School, brings extensive expertise in banking, corporate finance, and financial intermediation. His research has been published in prestigious journals, such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. In addition to his academic contributions, Professor Steffen has significant industry experience, having previously worked in credit risk management at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt and New York. He is also a frequent speaker at international conferences and events hosted by central banks, governments, and global organizations.

Professor Steffen’s appointment highlights the significance of academic research in shaping financial policies and underscores the Centre for European Transformation’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and stability in Europe. He succeeds Professor Christian Gollier, Director of the Toulouse School of Economics, in this esteemed role.

The Centre for European Transformation congratulates Professor Steffen on this achievement and looks forward to his contributions to the ESRB’s mission.
